At 17, He Built His Own Mini-house From Recycled Materials.

Building your own house without having to depend on someone else is the dream of many people. Tom is a young man who felt this need very early on, and at the age of 17, he designed and built a house entirely on his own. Having started attending a carpentry school, he was able to find wood at the best price and source mostly recycled materials. He was able to do it on his grandfather’s land and at a fraction of the cost compared to “real” construction companies.

Tom proudly showed his work on the web, taking pictures of the well-furnished and really comfortable interior. His carpentry teacher can be proud of this student! Let’s take a closer look at the little house.

With a budget of fewer than 9,000 euros, Tom managed to build this little house. Perfect for its current needs, it has a beautiful veranda, a large patio door, and a heating system which – in the future – could be powered by a solar panel. Tom built all of this on a small piece of land owned by his maternal grandfather and now owns his own house owing nothing to anyone. Great satisfaction for this young man who invested all his savings in this project, working for around 5 euros per hour.

“My goal was to use reclaimed wood for construction as my budget was very limited,” Tom said. In fact, most of the wood used came from other houses that Tom reused. After transporting them to his sawmill, he sanded them and reused them. The result is a traditional rustic playhouse that looks a bit like a dollhouse.

At the same time, it is an ecological structure made of natural materials in harmony with the surrounding countryside.

The sleeping area was created in the attic, which is accessed by a ladder. “It’s not a space where you can stand up,” said Tom, “but it is the charm of an attic bedroom !”

As you can see, the kitchen is perfectly fitted out to be bright and functional. “Of course I have to keep everything in some order, Tom admits, but everything is designed to have its own place. Cooking here is very satisfying now that everything is practical and functional!

The living room has a standard sofa and wall mounted TV for recreation, but this is also where Tom works and eats. His goal was to buy a versatile sofa with built-in storage.

“ Nothing better than to enjoy the veranda with a good tea in hand! ” Indeed, we are all a little envious of the prowess of the result obtained by this young man. But the realization of such a project implies above all perseverance and a lot of manual skill.

As noted, Tom started building at the age of 17, spending a total of 8,200 euros . Her story teaches us that age and circumstances don’t matter too much when you have the determination to make your dreams come true. Of course, it will be interesting to see what other projects this young eco-construction hopeful will carry out.
